How we verify

Every rule has a source and a date.

If a number on this site or in the app can’t be traced to the Building Code or an official City page, it doesn’t belong here.

Where the rules come from

Building Code rules come from the Ontario Building Code, O. Reg. 163/24, and its supplementary standards. City rules come from each municipality’s own pages, by-laws and fee schedules. We link the exact page or PDF next to each answer.

How they’re written

Each rule is stored once, with its clause, the plain-English version you see and the values the design checks use. The pages on this site and the checks in the app read the same rule, so they can’t disagree. Today that’s 137 rules across decks, fences, bathrooms and basements.

How they stay current

Every City page shows the date its sources were last read. Fees are re-checked each January and every page at least every quarter. When sources disagree (it happens, even on the same City website), we say so and tell you which way the app leans and why.

What we don’t do

We don’t issue permits, stamp drawings or promise approval. Your City’s plans examiner decides. Work outside the standard families, like roofs, hot tubs, structural changes or second units, is flagged for a qualified designer or engineer instead of being guessed.

Found something wrong?

Tell us through your pilot contact with the page and the source. We fix verified errors and update the date.
