Bathroom renovations and plumbing permits
The short answer
Replacing a toilet, vanity or tub in the same spot usually doesn't need a permit. Adding or moving fixtures, drains or vents does: that's a plumbing permit. Kitchener charges $11 per fixture (minimum $95); Waterloo charges 1% of the construction cost.
Permit or not?
| What you're doing | Usually |
|---|---|
| Same fixtures, same spots | No permit |
| New shower where the tub was, same drain | Check with the City |
| Moving the toilet or adding a sink | Plumbing permit |
| New bathroom in the basement | Building and plumbing permits |
| Moving a wall or adding a window | Building permit |
What gets checked
- Drain and vent sizes, trap arm lengths and how they tie into the stack.
- Water supply sizes and a pressure-balanced or thermostatic shower valve.
- An exhaust fan that moves enough air (DivineDesigner's standard is 25 L/s in an insulated 125 mm duct) and vents outside, not into the attic.
- Waterproofing behind tile in wet areas and safety glass in shower doors.
